About Hui Yi
Hi! I'm Huiyi. W.H.Y is my initials and Music is my Why
Is learning to play the piano a childhood dream of yours? Are you someone who had given up on piano lessons in your younger days and hope to pick it up again?
Just like you, perhaps, my very first encounter with music was through hearing my favourite song. Humming or singing along with it. I still remember singing and dancing along to our favourite hits with my sister. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn piano at the young age of 7. In those days, the only way to learn the piano was through attending classical piano lessons, reading scores and going for examinations. After attending the traditional classical lessons for a year or so, my teacher told my mum that she had no interest to teach a student who has no talent and no interest in music! How heart-breaking it was to me then at that young age to be defined that “you have no talent”. I remember crying in front of the piano, which scared my parents, and that marked the end of my piano lessons. Later on in my teen years, where the pop music scene was popularised with Taiwanese singers like Jay Chou and David Tao, and the Singapore music scene began to gain vibrance with pop stars like Kit Chan, Stefanie Sun and JJ Lin. My interest in doing something more with my love in music started growing again. It started with buying many pop music CDs using my pocket money, to singing KTV with friends during my poly days. As my family's financial condition then could not afford to pay for my Pop Piano lessons, I started working part-time, selling bubble tea to earn my monthly lesson fees to pursue my interest in Pop Piano. My story changed once I started attending Pop Piano lessons. I was no longer the untalented child. With a new approach in learning the piano, playing and singing along to my favourite songs and artists, I started to excel and was able to share my love in music through mini-performances to my friends and met many similar passionate music lovers along the way. Since then, I have taught pop music for more than 15 years. It has been a fulfilling and humble journey to have taught over a hundreds of students “Are you sure I’m able to learn and play the piano at such an age?” This is the most common question asked by my students who are in their 30s and 40s. My teaching concept has made learning piano possible for everyone, especially working adult from zero background to classical teachers who would like to explore pop piano playing. I am very thankful to have this opportunity to bring out the best musical potential of everyone and I look forward to being a part of your music journey.
